Fascia

The body is more than just bones and muscles — working as levers and fulcrums. Beneath the surface of the skin lies the fascial matrix, a continuous web of connective tissue that shapes posture, supports movement, and communicates with the nervous system. Highly innervated, fascia holds both physical and emotional memory, shaping the patterns and posture in which we generally reside—much like the ocean floor records the movement of the tides.

Fascia is made up of various types of collagen and elastin fibres, bound together in a flexible and highly stable network. It is a living matrix of connective tissue, composed of 70-80% water. This fluid-rich network stretches, recoils, and transmits force and information throughout the body. In therapeutic yoga, cultivating an understanding and a felt sense of our fascia allows us to move with greater intelligence, release stored tension, and support emotional regulation.

What is Fascia?
Fascia is a network of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, organs, nerves, and even every cell. Rather than being separate layers, it forms a continuous, three-dimensional web throughout the body. This interconnected system:
    •   Made up of collagen fibrils that create tubes or tunnels filled with water
    •    Aids in fluid distribution and nutrient transport to surrounding tissues
    •    Enables muscles and organs to glide smoothly against each other
    •    Integrates with the lymphatic system, supporting immune function and waste removal
    •    Transmits mechanical forces to optimize movement
    •    Relays information between the nervous system and musculoskeletal system
    •    Stores tension and can reflect emotional patterns, supporting the mind-body connection
    •    Supports joint stability and alignment
    •    A primary contributor to proprioception, body awareness, and spatial orientation
    •    Responds dynamically to breath, and internal pressures, enhancing movement efficiency

The Fascial Matrix
Therapeutic yoga addresses the fascial system gently and mindfully, allowing tissues to release restrictions and congested fluids. Fascia reorganizes itself through slow, rhythmic, and subtle movements, therapeutic shear forces, and targeted weight bearing. It asks for our undivided attention. This reorganization is experienced as a sense of safety and a heightened awareness of the body in space. Every posture, stretch, and breath travels through this matrix, shaping alignment, movement, and even emotional states. Working with fascia supports emotional regulation, improves posture, and fosters a stronger connection to our environment.

Joanne Avison, recognized author, podcast host, and fascia expert, describes the fascial matrix as a living, intelligent system—a “transportation network of frequency, sound, and light.” It responds dynamically to stress, movement, and emotional experiences. Because fascia is a fluid matrix, or “liquid crystal,” that interacts with our environment, our embodiment—or awareness of our physical self—allows this information to be transmitted through connective tissue, infusing our cells with this living and lived experience. Due to this continuous, transduced, fluid interaction with the world around us, Avison reminds us "we are never not embodied".
