Restorative Yoga is the practice of receptive surrender, of moving our senses inward with increasing subtlety, and of deepening awareness of Self.
In this practice the body is completely supported through the use of various props. The client is lead through a short sequence of restorative postures, diaphragmatic breathing, and guided relaxation techniques.
In a Restorative Yoga session we start with developing a clear understanding and experience of diaphragmatic breathing. We learn how to engage and relax the muscle of the thoracic diaphragm for optimal breathing and relaxation. We learn how to relax the accessory muscles of breathing that can lead to anxiety and sympathetic activation. By attuning to the sensations of the body and directing awareness inside (interoception) we are enhancing the mind-body connection, mindfulness, and self-regulation, all of which are essential for maintaining optimal physical and psychological health.
The restorative postures are held with little to no effort through the use of various props including bolsters, blankets, blocks, chairs, pillows, straps, and even the wall. The poses are maintained for several minutes with modifications and guided meditations offered throughout. Thoughtfully curated sequences are designed to aid in reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep, regulating the nervous system, and promoting overall well-being.
Restorative Yoga is ideal for anyone experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and general dis-ease. This practice benefits conditions ranging from anxiety and insomnia to chronic pain and illness. Each session is guided with gentle hands-on assists, massage, aromatherapy and guided relaxation to deepen the experience of restoration. Session are conducted on radiant heated floors, or a massage table depending on the specific needs of the client. This is a practice that can be enjoyed by all, regardless of age, ability, or fitness level. Please call for more information.
