Restorative  Yoga

Picture
Restorative Yoga is the practice of deep surrender—of turning the senses inward with increasing awareness and subtlety. The body is fully supported with props, requiring little to no effort and encouraging a shift from doing into being. Clients are guided through gentle sequences, diaphragmatic breathing, and guided meditation. These sessions cultivate profound relaxation, restore balance to the nervous system, and nurture a quiet sense of calm and well-being.

In a Restorative Yoga session, we begin by developing a clear understanding and embodied experience of diaphragmatic breathing. Students learn to gently engage and release the thoracic diaphragm, supporting more efficient breathing and deep relaxation, while allowing the accessory muscles of respiration to soften—reducing patterns associated with anxiety and sympathetic activation. With new students, we often meet a few minutes early to introduce the mechanics of diaphragmatic breathing, using visual aids and guided demonstration to make the experience more accessible and tangible.

Restorative postures are held with the use of various props including bolsters, blankets, blocks, chairs, pillows, straps, and even the wall. The poses are maintained for several minutes with modifications and guided meditations offered throughout. Thoughtfully curated sequences are designed to aid in reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep, regulating the nervous system, and promoting overall well-being. The ability to regulate our emotional state arises when the body feels supported enough to change our state.

Restorative Yoga is ideal for anyone experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and general dis-ease. This practice benefits conditions ranging from anxiety and insomnia to chronic pain and illness. Each session is guided with gentle hands-on assists, massage, aromatherapy and guided relaxation to deepen the experience of restoration. Sessions are conducted on radiant heated floors, or a massage table depending on the specific needs of the client. This is a practice that can be enjoyed by all, regardless of age, ability, or fitness level. Please call for more information.
